About
VertexLensCalc is a free, independent digital tool designed to help eyeglass wearers, contact lens users, and students of optometry understand and apply the vertex distance conversion formula — the same clinical calculation that optometrists use when converting a spectacle prescription to contact lens power.
Why We Built This
If you wear glasses with a moderate to strong prescription and have ever tried to order contact lenses, you may have noticed that your contact lens power doesn’t always match your glasses prescription exactly. That difference isn’t an error — it’s physics.
Eyeglasses sit approximately 12 to 14 millimeters in front of your eye. Contact lenses sit directly on the cornea, at zero distance. That gap changes the effective power that reaches your eye. For prescriptions above ±4.00 D, the difference is clinically meaningful — and getting it wrong means blurry vision.
The formula to correct for this — called the vertex distance formula — is well-established in optometric literature and standardized by ISO 8980-1 and ANSI Z80.1. But most people don’t have easy access to a clear, accurate tool that applies it correctly. We built VertexLensCalc to change that.
What We Offer
- Vertex Distance Calculator: Enter your SPH and CYL values, set your vertex distance, and instantly see your estimated contact lens power — for both eyes, with astigmatism (CYL) handled correctly.
- Advanced Mode: Adjust for back vertex power or front vertex power, relevant for higher prescriptions.
- Educational Blog: Articles explaining how prescriptions work, what the numbers mean, how to read an optical prescription, and more — written in plain language for non-specialists.
Who Is This For?
VertexLensCalc is useful for:
- Eyeglass wearers who are curious about what their contact lens prescription would look like
- Contact lens wearers who want to double-check their prescription conversion
- Optometry students learning about vertex distance and effective power
- Anyone who wants to understand their prescription better
Important: This Is an Informational Tool
VertexLensCalc is not a medical service and does not issue prescriptions. We are not optometrists, ophthalmologists, or licensed healthcare providers. The results generated by our calculator are estimates based on a standardized mathematical formula — they are not a substitute for a professional eye examination or a valid contact lens prescription.
Contact lenses also require proper fitting (base curve, diameter, lens material) that only a licensed eye care professional can determine. If you are considering switching to contact lenses or changing your prescription, please consult a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Our Commitment
We are committed to keeping VertexLensCalc free, accurate, and transparent. We do not sell your data. We do not require sign-up. Prescription values you enter into our calculator stay entirely in your browser — they are never sent to our servers.
The Website is supported by advertising through Google AdSense, which allows us to keep the tool free for everyone.
