VertexLensCalc is a free, independent digital tool designed to help eyeglass wearers, contact lens users, and students of optometry understand and apply the vertex distance conversion formula — the same clinical calculation that optometrists use when converting a spectacle prescription to contact lens power.
Why We Built This
If you wear glasses with a moderate to strong prescription and have ever tried to order contact lenses, you may have noticed that your contact lens power doesn’t always match your glasses prescription exactly. That difference isn’t an error — it’s physics.
Eyeglasses sit approximately 12 to 14 millimeters in front of your eye. Contact lenses sit directly on the cornea, at zero distance. That gap changes the effective power that reaches your eye. For prescriptions above ±4.00 D, the difference is clinically meaningful — and getting it wrong means blurry vision.
The formula to correct for this — called the vertex distance formula — is well-established in optometric literature and standardized by ISO 8980-1 and ANSI Z80.1. But most people don’t have easy access to a clear, accurate tool that applies it correctly. We built VertexLensCalc to change that.
