Use fresh disinfecting solution every time you clean and store reusable contact lenses. Empty the used solution from the case; do not add fresh solution to yesterday’s liquid. A lens left in an unopened case and an opened solution bottle have different time limits, so there is no single replacement interval for all three.
Used case solution: replace it after every use
The CDC’s lens-care guidance advises fresh solution rather than mixing new and used liquid. Follow your product’s rubbing, rinsing and full soaking instructions. A quick rinse alone is not disinfection.
After taking lenses out, discard the used liquid. Clean the case as directed using fresh solution, not tap water, and allow it to dry as instructed. Do not keep an apparently clear batch for another cleaning cycle.
Daily disposable lenses are single-use: discard them after removal rather than cleaning and storing them for another wear. Daily wear describes a wearing schedule and can include reusable lenses; it does not mean every lens is a daily disposable. Check the product and prescription.
Stored lenses: check the named solution’s instructions
A storage allowance applies to lenses correctly cleaned and disinfected, then left in a closed, unopened case. It is not permission to reuse dirty solution or to keep an opened lens past its replacement deadline.

These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable instructions. Puremoist specifies at least six hours of soaking; Biotrue Hydration Plus specifies at least four hours. CLEAR CARE requires its special case and full six-hour neutralization. Use the current label for your exact product and market, and your clinician’s lens-care directions.
Opened bottle: follow both its discard period and expiration date
The CooperVision safety instructions distinguish the printed expiration date from the discard period after opening. Write the opening date on the bottle and follow its stated discard period. Do not use a universal 90-day rule for every brand or bottle.
Keep the tip away from fingers and other surfaces, close the cap after use, and do not decant solution into another container. Bottle handling and lens storage are separate from how often you replace the lenses themselves.
What if you only wear contacts occasionally?
Use the storage limit for your solution, but keep tracking the reusable lens’s calendar replacement deadline. Leaving a monthly lens in its case does not pause that calendar. If you cannot establish when a lens was opened, which solution was used or whether it completed disinfection, do not treat a new splash of solution as proof that it is ready to wear. Ask your eye care professional about the appropriate replacement and care instructions.
